Role Context

West Africa is a fast-growing and thriving remittance and payments region. Providing one of the largest revenue streams for WorldRemit, yet the region continues to present enormous growth potential across Senegal, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire , Benin, Sierra Leone and Mali.

Previously, WorldRemit has successfully built and established relationships with a wide variety of correspondents ranging from mobile operators, banks, financial institutions and retailers, including Tier 3 financial institutions and Tier 1 mobile operators, across the region.

Now, WorldRemit is looking to continue that growth by now partnering with the larger Tier 1 financial institutions, and enabling a wider variety of choice in payout options for our customers.

WorldRemit is therefore looking for a highly experienced, driven and well-connected Head to maintain and grow the business in West Africa.

Using their broad understanding of the market and networks, the Head of West Africa will aim to increase the revenue by generating new business opportunities with target organisations by championing WorldRemit’s ethos and social mission.

Role Overview

A commercial and business leadership role, the Head of West Africa and Country Manager Cameroon will be responsible for growing WorldRemit across these key countries in the immediate term.

Additionally, countries may be added from time to time based on reprioritisation and organisational necessity. They will achieve this primarily by striking the right correspondent partnerships while engaging existing partners across the region in deepening the relationship and accelerating our growth.

They will strike 'win-win' deals to act as a catalyst to customer acquisition and increased volume growth.

Furthermore, setting up co-branded marketing between WorldRemit and the correspondent will be an integral component of growing the company's brand in the region.

The new hire will supplement this by in-country marketing activities, where they can drive a positive return-on-investment.

Whilst leading from the front to execute on these activities, the Head of West Africa will work closely with the communications and marketing team in London for support and to exchange ideas.

This hire will also have a good understanding or appreciation of the regulatory landscape as it relates to international remittances and mobile money.

With the appropriate skills and experience to engage senior officials within central banks or regulators to ensure our businesses remain compliant and licensed to operate.

In addition, where applicable, they will support the license application working closing with internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to law firms and central banks.

A strategic and analytical thinker, this new hire will rapidly build up a strong understanding of the opportunities for the online remittances industry and analyse the market to identify where the opportunities lie.

They will rapidly create a commercial plan for the region which rigorously prioritizes the most profitable opportunities, balancing investment with short- and long-term results.

Through relationships and networking, they will penetrate the senior decision-making cadre within target organisations. They will not just structure the deals, but also act as a trusted relationship manager and ensure that they are optimising the partnership for both sides.

Whilst this person will have the full support of the London-based operations team, they will be the first point of contact for escalation.

The hire will use their broad insight into consumer trends in the region and usage of WorldRemit to generate ideas with the London-based Product team for enhancing the service.

A highly versatile professional, the Head of West Africa will act as a true ambassador for WorldRemit in all circumstances.

This role will report into the Regional Director, Middle East and Africa and based in Cameroon.

Role Profile

The Head of West Africa will be an entrepreneurial and hands-on business builder, who will have a track record of setting a strategic vision and turning it into reality.

They will have the analytical prowess to build up a deep understanding of market dynamics and likely sources of business.

A proven business development professional and relationship builder, they will have previously sold into the highest levels of target organisations.

They will have a sophisticated business development mentality, able to synthesise feedback for the good of the product organisation and roll out co-branded marketing campaigns, maintaining faithfulness to the brand values whilst respecting regional sensibilities.

A natural self-starter, this person will be able to work autonomously, travelling up to 30% of the time. Simultaneously they will be highly adept at leveraging the broader assets of the organisation and rapidly build up a close working relationship with key individuals in HQ.

Through their verbal, written and presentation skills, they will have the gravitas, cultural sensitivity and organisational savvy to act as an ambassador for WorldRemit at all times.

It would be advantageous but by no means a prerequisite, that this person has had experience in selling into banks and financial institutions in the region.

They will speak fluent English and French, and could be from a consumer technology or banking background, with exposure to payments or value-added services.

  • Strong commercial acumen and relationship management skills With a sophisticated business development mentality, the incoming hire will have outstanding persuasion skills and a track record of having negotiated and closed long-term deals.
  • They will understand the multi-faceted nature of the commercial relationship between WorldRemit and its financial institutions, mobile operator and retail partners, creatively conceive and develop win-win’ solutions, and optimise ongoing relationships.

    They will understand the time-scales and effort needed to succeed. They will excel at educating clients and pushing forward new and innovative product solutions.

  • Strategic, analytical, product and marketing mindset : This person will know how to scope out the parameters and dynamics of the correspondent and consumer market.
  • They will know how conceive well-thought through commercial and marketing plans reflecting the realities of different markets within the region and integrate their thinking about different commercial scenarios.

    They will have strong insight into consumer products and marketing.

  • Autonomous self-management - This hire will be expected to work autonomously. They will know how to multi-task and prioritise which relationships and campaigns to work on.
  • They will thrive in a fast-moving environment and navigate ambiguity with ease. They will be tenacious in their efforts to close deals, including travel where necessary.

    They will own the strategy and effectively execute on it.

  • Communication and collaboration - The candidate will be a strong communicator - persuasive and charismatic, with the ability to communicate with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • They will have the flexibility and intellectual curiosity to understand and work with a variety of partners and business models, seeing quickly where value will be added in prospective partnerships.

    The right candidate will be adept at building successful internal relationships, with product, marketing, finance, and operations.
